Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of Hanging Grapes". Pontotoc is rich in history. Pontotoc was founded by General Thomas MacMackin. General McMackin was a successful businessman and in particular a land speculator / hotel keeper. When he purchased the land in 1836 from the Chickasaw Indians for $1,000 he quickly turned his investment into $80,000 by dividing the land into lots.
Pontotoc became a town on May 4, 1836, and the first courthouse was built in 1840. Like many places in the Southern states, cotton was a huge cash crop and large plantation dotted the landscape. Numerous battles were fought in Pontotoc County during the Civil War.

Although the courthouse burned down in 1900, Pontotoc carried on. Pontotoc County experienced much growth during the twentieth century. The famous Sawilmon Hotel was constructed in 1911, and the current courthouse was opened in 1917. Pontotoc saw electricity introduced in 1935 with the library´s dedication in 1976. They say the first Christian wedding on the North American continent was in Pontotoc County between Juan Ortez and Princess Saowana, daughter of Chief Uceta, of the Florida Seminole tribe. A mural in the museum's lobby titled The Wedding of Ortez and SaOwana - Christmas 1540 depicts the event that was said to have been during the visit of Hernando Desoto.
The Town Square Museum/Post Office is yet another important piece of Pontotoc history. It is located in downtown Pontotoc in the old US post office. This historic building houses Pontotoc memorabilia and continues to operate as a full -service post office. Pontotoc, the "Land of the Hanging Grapes" continues to prosper today.
Pontotoc is 13 miles from Tupelo in northeastern Mississippi and a little less than 100 miles from Nashville, Tennessee. Pontotoc is close to the Tupelo National Battlefield, where in 1864 the Battle of Tupelo in which Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest tried to cut the railroad supplying the Union's march on Atlanta. The famous outlaws Jesse & Frank James and their notorious gang once hid at an old house which was used as a Union Army hospital during the Battle of Harrisburg in Pontotoc County
